Feature | Owner & Founder of The Luxe and Lavish Travels
What is your name, location (born, raised & live now) & Age (or age range)
My name is Camy Duff and I am a Jamaican from Toronto, Canada. I am in my 30’s
What is your occupation?
I am a legal professional, a certified travel agent, and Founder of Luxe and Lavish Travels and The 3LLE Collective.
How many countries have you visited?
Not enough, but I have visited approximately 15 countries.
Do you prefer Solo Travel? Group Travel? OR Baecation?
I prefer solo travel and baecations
Strict schedule, or go with the flow?
Because I am a planner & organizer by profession, I really like a schedule. Doesn’t have to be strict, but I really like to get in as much as I can, and be able to have the flexibility to change course.
Beer or wine?
HA! Can I say both? I am not too much of a drinker, but I do enjoy a nice cold beer on the beach, and a glass of wine with popcorn in front of a good TV show lol
What has been the best street food you’ve had?
The best street food? Well my most recent memory was at The Beerfest in Toronto, where they had this food truck that was selling a grilled mac & cheese sandwich with some other deliciousness. I had to share it, which made me upset. Lol It was so mouth - watering good! Check out Fidel Gastro and when you are in the city, see if you can spot their truck!
What destination have you found to be overrated?
Atlanta Georgia. Lol Lawd, I hope I don’t offend anyone.
The thing is, I had gone there so many times expecting the nightlife to resemble that of what is on TV and in music videos that I was highly disappointed. My first experience was riddled with high expectations, so I must say… to me it’s overrated.
I have returned for business and for that I must say, it is a great place to connect as they have amazing conferences, & entrepreneurs with great ideas & some fabulous southern food; however, I had an expectation outside of business and it has not lived up to that hype - YET!
What was the most challenging thing you’ve done?
Well, apart from hiking up very tall mountains in Hawaii and Bali, (though I wouldn’t classify that to be challenging now that I think about it) I will say my most recent memory of something challenging was kayaking in the Gulf of California. Let me tell you, that I was not prepared to be racing with any other kayaker that day. My partner in the boat wanted to ensure we were not left behind so instead of me focusing on taking in the beauty, I was rushed and thus my arms literally felt like they were going to fall off. I definitely was not equipped for that adventure.
City or countryside?
Can I say both? Why are you asking me to choose? lol
Um, I would lean more to City, as I feel I would have much more to see. I thoroughly enjoy nature and love a good hike as mother nature is beautiful and amazing. I am always at awe and wish my camera could really capture the true essence of what my eyes witness, however I really enjoy being immersed in the culture of food and activities and when I think about the places I have been, I am always ensuring I get to experience the city with the locals.
What country has the best weather?
Oooo I am a tropical girl, so I would definitely have to say anywhere hot! The hottest I have ever been was in Bali, and I loved every freaking minute of it. My friend who is Italian, not so much, but when I visited Italy in October I was really not happy at how cold it was. Lol So definitely any country that has hot weather is always the best for me.
Window or Aisle Seat?
As much flying as I have done, I hate it! So I am all about that Aisle Seat. I don’t have much pictures of flying! Apparently that’s a thing.
What is the longest single journey you’ve taken?
To China direct flight. 19 hours straight! GAWD!!!
What has been your weirdest moment?
Weirdest moment??? Geez, um… actually, I won’t share that experience lol
Would you rather see a lot of places, or get to know one really well?
See a lot of places. I tend to plan tight itineraries for myself, and anyone who travels with me will know that I put them through a rigorous back to back days and then a rest day followed by back to back days LOL. You need stamina when traveling with me lol. I need to see it all because my mantra is there are far too many places in this world to visit the same place again. I leave my multiple trips of seeing a place again for like birthdays, business trips, family vacations etc.
Do you prefer hot, cold or temperate places?
See my previous answer. Anywhere hot! I haven’t been to Iceland for this reason, and I know I need to go, I just haven’t braced myself as of yet for that cold.
What’s the most interesting animal you’ve seen?
Unfortunately, I do not remember the name, but Thailand for me had to have had the most interesting animals to date. This one in particular animal that is in the monkey family, makes a really loud noise when other animals are coming to alert their comrades. It literally sounded like an emergency car alarm. It was very interesting indeed.
Who is your dream travel companion?
Someone who is open minded. My friends inspired me to get into the travel business because they have all been so relaxed and open minded allowing me to plan their vacations, and I find that when people are afraid to try new things it really stifles the growth. My team definitely knows that as well because I can’t work in an environment that does not allow for openness.
What is your dream travelling experience?
Oooo dream traveling experience? I find every time I travel I get exposed to more and more that it just increases my expectations of what my traveling experience should be like. I think I really enjoy when the service is spot on. So being able to experience service from truly passionate people who are offering. And luxurious accommodation! That is a must-have for me lol
Are you usually, late, or bang on time?
LOL I don’t play. Bang on time! I hate the fluttering of my heart if I am running to catch a plane. It’s happened and I had an out of body experience lol
How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
Transparent, energetic, organized
What was your top favourite destination you have been to? And why?
Ugh. I do not have one! I am going to say the most impactful was my family trip to Hawaii because it was our first trip together as adults where we really learned more about each other. It was fun, it was interesting, it was survival. Lol
What can’t you travel without?
My cellphone. Unfortunately, my businesses, my life are all on my cellphone. I take photos, I journal, I use the apps to stay connected with the country I am visiting. They really make these phones apart of you. WOW! I am just realizing the dependency. Lol
What has been the most interesting item of food you've tasted?
So I am NOT open to trying new foods. Lol. So to answer this question, I haven’t had anything interesting. If I don’t know it or can’t spell it, I ain’t trying it. That is one of the few things I am not open to, and also because I have been actively trying to go back as a vegan for some time now. However, I am that friend that will tell YOU to try it and encourage lol
Which country has the friendliest people?
I thought Mexico had some very nice people. They were so appreciative, & warm.
What has been your scariest moment on vacation?
When I was unsure if I was going to make it back home by almost missing my flight. That particular trip really tested me as a traveler, because the entire time transitioning from one place to the next, whether it be via train or plane, we were always cutting it close. And I still couldn’t figure out why that kept happening.
What’s the longest you have been away from home?
I am not a fan of long trips from home, unless I am far away like Asia so that for me was the longest. 2 weeks without family. Unless of course you count being away at school. lol
Where would you most like to live in the world?
ASIA! I have told everyone that I am retiring in ASIA! Doesn’t matter where over there but that is where I am going.
What has surprised you about yourself?
That I am a badass! HA!
but on a more serious note, that I am very calm during intense situations. Throwing away my declaration card and then being told you need it to exit the country, was something I took in stride. Also, not having a place to lay my head the day my tour ended while they are driving us to the airport because I didn’t calculate the number of days properly. It’s also been my quick thinking that surprised me in those moments.
What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned?
That there are still areas in certain countries that have never been exposed to black people. Being treated as an anomaly has been quite the experience in some places.
What is your top travel tip?
Pack your essentials in your carry-on, as you never know if your checked bag will be with you when you arrive there or back home.
Luxury or Affordable?
Luxury all the way & even affordable luxury as well 😊
What is the most reliable source of travel advice?
Learn the language to where you are going. OR have something or someone to assist with that.
What is your biggest first world problem?
Not having an infinity pool or hot tub in my hotel room.
Where is your next destination?
Atlanta for business! LOL
And last but not least, where can readers find you?
